Important update: Changes to electricity meters that could affect you
3rd March 2025
Customers
The technology that switches some meters from peak to off-peak price is coming to an end soon. This means that if you have a Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) electricity meter, your energy supplier will need to update it.
What’s happening?
The RTS system, which helps your meter switch between cheaper off-peak and standard peak rates, will be switched off permanently on 30 June 2025. This means your current meter will no longer work properly unless it’s upgraded.
What does this mean for you?
If you have an RTS meter, your energy supplier will contact you to replace it with a new meter before the switch-off date. This is important because without an upgrade, your heating and hot water may not work as they should after the RTS is turned off.
How do I know if I have an RTS meter?
You might have an RTS meter if:
- There’s a separate switch box near your meter with a “Radio Teleswitch” label.
- Your home uses electric storage heaters or immersion heaters for hot water.
- You’re on an Economy 7, Economy 10, or Total Heat Total Control tariff.
If you’re unsure, contact your energy supplier to check. If you don’t know who your supplier is, you can find out on Ofgem’s website.
What should I do?
- Contact your energy supplier: They are responsible for upgrading your meter. If they haven’t already, reach out to them to arrange an appointment.
- Upgrade your meter: Your supplier will replace your old RTS meter with a new one, which could be a smart meter or a non-smart meter. This will ensure your heating and hot water continue to work as normal.
- Ask questions: If you’re unsure about the upgrade or how it will affect your energy tariff, ask your supplier for more information.
What if I don’t upgrade my meter?
If you don’t upgrade your meter before 30 June 2025, you might face issues like:
- Your heating or hot water stopping altogether.
- Your storage heaters charging at the wrong time, which could increase your energy bills.
- Your supplier being unable to bill you accurately.
