Home adaptations

If you need help getting around your home, or are finding it harder to do day-to-day tasks due to a disability, we may be able to help make things easier for you.

What are aids and adaptations?

Aids and adaptations are changes to your home. These help you live independently and safely and can improve your health and wellbeing. They could include simple things such as grab rails to help you out of the bath, to ramps to your front door and walk-in showers. Aids and adaptations could even include larger changes such as a stairlift.

Aids and adaptations aren’t just for older people. The youngest person we have supported is a seven year old who needed wheelchair access into their home.

How does it work?

Simply let us know you if you think you, or someone you live with, would benefit from an aid or adaptation. We are here to guide you through the process and if required will arrange for one of our Trusted Assessors to visit you at home and help decide the best course of action.

Minor adaptations

Minor adaptations are small adjustments to your home. They include things like key safes, grab rails, handrails, lever taps or half steps to your front door. We can normally do these quite quickly for you.

What to do if you need a minor adaptation:

Give us a ring on 0300 555 6666

If you need additional support to understand what minor adaptations may help you live more independently in your home, we will send out one of our trained assessors who will chat with you and find out exactly what you need.

We will book in an appointment with you to carry out the necessary work.

Major adaptations

Major adaptations are larger adjustments to your home. They could include a stair or floor lift, changing your bath to a walk-in shower or installing ramps.

What to do if you need a major adaptation:

  • You must make any requests for major adaptations to your Local Authority. If you live in Walsall you can ring Health and Social Care on 0300 555 2922 or email InitialIntake@walsall.gov.uk
  • All requests for a major adaptation will require an Occupational Therapist to come out to see you in your home to assess your requirements and write a report – this is arranged by the Local Authority
  • Larger adaptations costing more than £3000 will normally be carried out by your local council through a Disabled Facilities Grant. This is means-tested – so you may have to pay towards the cost, depending on your financial situation.  The Local Authority will provide you with advice on the application process for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
Customer story

“Trying to get into the bath was painful and making me out of breath. An Occupational Therapist assessed me and then someone came out to take measurements and see what I needed. I was given a choice of tiles and I chose a lovely bright floor.

“You wouldn’t believe the difference having a shower does for your mental health. It has made all the difference in the world.”
