A “totally rubbish” event held to encourage people to think about recycling and upcycling has been hailed a huge success.

More than 80 community members turned up to whg’s litter-themed family day out, which was held in Ryecroft Community Hub on 14 May.

The event had been organised to encourage customers to think about their neighbourhoods, and how whg can work with them to make improvements in their area.

Families were able to enjoy a funfilled day of activities – all of which were made out of rubbish. These included a litter picking time challenge and a stack the trash competition.

whg’s Neighbourhood Services team were on hand to chat to customers about how they can work with them to build a greener community, while Aldridge Sheds transformed a piece of furniture found in the area. Ryecroft Community Hub gave out household energy packs and Birchills Agenda 21 group provided a barbecue.

Customer Maggie said: “The day has been fantastic. It’s really important we learn about recycling and it has been amazing to see how litter can be resued to make things like bags. I also won a litter picker which I’m going to use when walking the dog along the canal to tidy up the area.”

Vicky Green, Community Engagement & Inclusion Manager, said: “The event was a huge success and gave our Neighbourhood Services team the opportunity to learn more about local neighbourhood satisfaction and ways to work in partnership with the community to make improvements.

“We had some really good conversations with customers about what they want to do differently where they live, with many going home with prizes to inspire them to get outdoors and others joining the Walsall Community Litter Watch.

“We’re delighted with how many customers turned up to our event and hope to run similar events in the future.”
