whg has teamed up with a local charity for the seventh year to bring light to vulnerable families across Walsall during Diwali.

Volunteers from the housing association joined the Diwali Basket Brigade to distribute food parcels containing vegetarian food and toiletries to some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

Around 800 Diwali baskets were distributed to customers of all faiths and backgrounds who had been nominated.

This year whg also partnered with local organisations, including YMCA and Walsall Food Bank to support their work in the community and distribute more hampers.

Connie Jennings, Director of Stronger Communities at whg, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to join forces with the Diwali Basket Brigade again. These hampers bring hope to families during colder months, helping ease the challenge of balancing essentials like food and warmth.”

“Partnering with other local organisations has allowed us to reach even more families who are feeling the strain of the season. Together, we were able to extend the support network in our community, ensuring more people experience the warmth and generosity that Diwali represents.”

The baskets were funded by donations from across the community. They contained healthy vegetarian food, toiletries and a handmade Diwali Card from Manav Sadna, an Indian charity which helps children out of poverty.

Founder Deepak Parekh started Diwali Basket Brigade in 2018 as a way for the community to give back during Diwali.

He said: “Diwali is about more than just celebration – it’s about community, kindness, and sharing hope with those who need it most. No one should have to go hungry, and through this initiative, we’re showing that we’re stronger together.”

Last year’s project provided 20,000 meals to families in need across London, Manchester, and Birmingham, where the initiative began.
