Leading Midlands landlord whg has been recognised for its outstanding sustainability work with a national award.
The housing association won ESG team of the year at the Unlock Net Zero Awards 2024 in Manchester on 26 June.
The award recognises whg’s commitment to ESG – short for Environmental, Social and Governance – that is championed by teams across the organisation.
Judges were impressed by the “clear, robust golden thread” which ensures that sustainability is embedded across the organisation and fully understood and embraced by colleagues.
Successes include establishing a network of Sustainability Champions, with the aim of demystifying ESG and promoting sustainable thinking.
Judges also heard how whg became one of the first in the UK to be accredited as a sustainable housing provider by pan-European consultancy RITTERWALD in 2023.
Rather than one department being responsible for ESG, whg brings together a wider team of specialists in the areas of environment, sustainability, social responsibility and governance.
The team is led by Head of Sustainability & ESG Jo Shields, who was also shortlisted in the Climate champion of the year category.
Jo said: “This award reflects the collective commitment of colleagues from across our business to increase sustainability and create a long-lasting impact that will benefit our customers and communities.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have been recognised in this way as we continue on our journey to achieving net zero carbon by 2050.”
